We celebrated organisation, persistence, getting along and confidence in class with Alana, Jessica, Robert and Hasan being congratulated for their achievements. We also celebrated our most improved reader, our handwriting hero and our Avril Barker award winner, congratulations to Hannah, Oliwia and Roberto.

Year 5 have been enjoying Christmas activities this week. We have made puppet shows to retell the Nativity story. We visited the Kirkgate Theatre in Cockermouth to watch The Nativity film. We have also made printing blocks and used these to make some amazing Christmas cards and matching wrapping paper. We used photographs of the Lake District as inspiration for watercolour paintings. We loved painting with watercolours and have used these to make some beautiful calendars. We would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a very happy New Year. Stay safe and healthy and have a lovely holiday.

Friday 13th September

This week we continued working on our stuffed toys in DT. We have finished them and learned how to use blanket stitch.  Our toys have lovely bright colours and we are really pleased with them.

In English, we wrote Haiku poems. They are Japanese poems which have 3 lines. The first and last line have 5 syllables and the middle line has 7 syllables. We wrote them with a space theme.

We have been working on using decimal numbers in maths and carried on working on place value.

Friday 11th September

We have come back to school after the summer holidays and we have had a awesome, brilliant, fantastic week. At the start of the week, we did art. We have used collage and painting to create space themed artwork. We found out about Peter Thorpe, he is a graphic designer who has worked with NASA and he is an artist. He loves space. We used photographs of space to create our collaged background. We sketched rockets, planets, galaxies, stars, the moon and comets. Then we painted them, cut them out carefully and collaged them onto our background.  In DT we are doing a textiles topic. We have designed our own plushies and made paper patterns. Today, we are going to sew and stuff our toys. We have been reading War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells. We think it is good because it is interesting and it is packed with action. We have a new way of learning about PHCE and have new characters in our class called JEZ and JERRY. We can't wait to learn more about them. Maths has been challenging and interesting we have been working on place value.
