Miller's Farm
As part of our Geography unit about the Lake District and UNESCO World Heritage sites we visited Miller's Farm in Penruddock. We were amazed by the animals which lived on the farm. Aticus the bull was very calm, which surprised us and his bellow was very loud and deep when we stopped paying attention to him. We were able to see some new born lambs with their mothers and were even allowed to pet some of them. This was very exciting. We expected them to feel soft but their fleece was quite rough. The pigs were funny. They like to escape and eat the grass and food in the next field but they get an electric shock when they do this. The sheep dog trials was the highlight of the visit. The dogs all have their own whistles and Garry has to remember which dog his which whistle command. Their team work was amazing and the dogs seemed to have fun too. This was a brilliant day, we learned lots of new things and saw some of the things we had learned about in school.
Hour of Code
We worked with a group of students from Carlisle College to learn how to code as part of our computing curriculum. They taught us how to use the Hour of Code website and how to use code blocks. We worked on a few different tasks and games. We like flappy birds the best. The students knew a lot about coding and it was fun to learn how to code with them. We hope we can go and visit the college in summer term to do some more coding activities.
Mini Medics
We took part in the Manchester United Mini Medics project for six weeks. We learned how to do CPR and use a defibrillator. We learned how to put someone into the recovery position and keep them safe until help arrived. We practised dressing and bandaging wounds. We also learned about how to help someone with asthma.
Our Geography unit was all about the United States of America. We located and researched the states thinking about their human and physical features. We used data about land use to create some comparison grids. We researched facts about how the states have changed over time.
Our science unit was about classification of living things. We researched fungi and made posters about the facts we found. We also sorted living things using their characteristics. We research Carl Linneaus who develeoped a system to classify living things which is still used today.
Our first trip was to the Alionby Wetlands, it supported our science unit which was classification of living things. We investigated invertebrates and vertebrates in a variety of ways: we watched bees forming a nest in a beech tree, we searched the hedgerow looking for evidence of living things and we went pond dipping. We used classification keys to identify the living things we found.
