Year 2 (Miss Ward)

Good morning year 2!

It's lovely to see that so many of you are logging into purple mash to complete your online learning.

Remember to look carefully at the tasks and please take your time to finish them - particularly the English ones. I am looking for your writing to be as good at home as it was in school!

If you have any questions or queries remember you can contact me on the email: yeartwoet@brookst.cumbria.sch.uk  I will be checking this email address during school hours and will aim to reply as quickly as I can.

Mrs Taylor

Hello year 2!

Firstly, I'd like to wish you all a happy new year. I hope you have had a lovely break with your families and are now ready to work hard!

Things are a bit strange in the world again and I won't be seeing all of you for a little while, but I will be posting videos and uploading activities to purple mash for you to complete - please try your best!

Below is the log in information for a website called Epic Reads https://www.getepic.com/educators

If you use the log in information you can access free books to read at home. It is an American website so is sorted into grades, however, you can search for books using your accelerated reader reading range - the number on the book you take home. If you aren't sure what your AR range is, please start with books in the lowest range and then go up if you find them easy. I would love to hear that you are reading at home and enjoying books so please do let me know if you are!

You can also find lots of ebooks to read on the Oxford Owl website too - https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/

Happy reading!

I will update the website regularly and I will try to video a story as often as I can!

See you all again soon,

Mrs Taylor

Year 2 - an update  08.10.2020

In year 2 we have been working exceptionally hard over the last few weeks, below is a summary of some of the things we have been busy doing!

In our English lessons we have learnt about the features of a traditional tale with a twist. We looked closely at the text 'Emily Brown and the Thing' by Lauren Child and we have used the story line to create our own (innovated) versions. In order to do this, we created story maps in the shape of mountains and used actions to help us remember the key events.

In our maths lessons we have been learning about greater than, less than and equal to. We have also been using our knowledge of these concepts and applying it to measures -  we measured the mass of objects in our room and put them in ascending order. We have also been thinking about addition using an empty number. Using our knowledge of place value, we have been jumping along the line using a small number of jumps - we found this quite challenging initally.

In our history lessons we have been learning about Florence Nightingale. We have learnt about the time in which she was born and the important job she did in improving hospital conditions during the Crimean war. We have been using words such as; long ago, century and change.

Classroom Routines:

  • In year 2 we are set 10 spellings every Monday which are tested on a Friday morning.
  • We change our reading books twice a week - Mondays and Thursdays. We have a quarantine box for our books to go into to ensure they are safe.
  • Our PE day is Monday  - we are currently learning about invasion games and have been practising our throwing, catching, attacking and defending skills.

Drake the dragon - attached below is a picture of Drake the dragon. He is our class pet who would usually go home with 1 child each week. Due to covid restrictions, Drakes diary and picture can come home but he unfortunately cannot. Please read a story to him  and draw pictures or write what you have done with him over the weekend if you are lucky enough to be chosen!

Parents evening - If you do not have an allocated slot please get in contact with school and I will arrange one for you.

If you have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to contact me.

Blaze the dragon - our class pet

Hello and Welcome to year 2 :)

I hope you have had a brilliant first week in year 2! I have really enjoyed getting to know you all, finding out what you can remember from year 1 and starting some really good work too.

This week we have been learning about Georgia O'Keeffe. We discovered that she painted huge flowers, we commented on our likes and dislikes of her work and then used her ideas to inspire our own artwork. We have experimented with oil pastels, collage material and we are going to be using paint next week too. Alongside our work on Georgia O'Keeffe, we have read a book called 'The Flower' by

John Light. In maths we have been looking at closely at place value using practical equipment. We have learnt how to use 10 frames, bead strings and base 10 equipment to represent a number and to partition. It has been a busy week!

Starting next week (W/C 14th September) we will be doing PE every Monday afternoon. Please bring your PE kit into school and leave it on your peg; we will send it home at the end of half term. We will also be starting to learn about the life of Florence Nightingale in our history lessons - she was a very significant person; I wonder what you already know about her?
